Bighorn Sheep Survey

At Fisheries Resource Volunteer Corps (FRVC), we are dedicated to protecting and preserving the diverse wildlife that call the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests home. One of the ways we do this is through assisting the US Forest Service with their annual Bighorn Sheep Survey, a crucial project that helps us understand the population and habitat of this iconic species.

The California Bighorn Sheep, also known as Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, is a subspecies of bighorn sheep that is native to California. They are an important species in the ecosystem, playing a vital role in maintaining the balance of the natural environment. Unfortunately, their population has been in decline due to habitat loss, disease, and other human-caused factors.

Our Bighorn Sheep Survey is an important step in understanding the status of the bighorn sheep population in the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests. The survey is conducted by the Forest Service at specific times of the year. Volunteers hike through the designated survey areas, counting and recording the number of sheep they see. The data collected helps us to understand the population size and distribution, as well as the health of the sheep.

We encourage anyone who is interested in joining us on this important project to contact us to learn more about how you can get involved. Together, we can make a real difference in protecting and preserving the California Bighorn Sheep in the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests.

By volunteering on this survey, you will not only be helping to protect this species, but also have the opportunity to see and learn about these majestic animals in their natural habitat. The survey takes place on different trails and routes, and the hike may be strenuous, but the experience of being in the wilderness and observing the big horn sheep is definitely worth it.
