FRVC will be conducting a trash assessment on the East Fork San Gabriel River. Hiking is minimal and some locations are not currently open or accessible to the public to to fire damage.
FRVC has partnered with the Forest Service to evaluate the impact of trash left in the stream and stream banks by recreational visitors. Because of the results of prior surveys, the East Fork was listed on the Clean Water Act's section 303(d) list of impaired waters due to trash and debris. The California Regional Water Quality Control Board has tasked the administrating body for the stream, the Forest Service, to ensure that the trash does not exceed set health standards referred to Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).
The survey will encompass 4 locations (reaches) along the East Fork.
- The flats downstream of Follows Camp
- The stream across from the Oaks Picnic Area
- Eldoradoville vicinity or the area near the confluence of Cattle Canyon and the East Fork
- The area below Coyote Flats
The survey includes both in-stream and stream bank assessments.

On the 2nd and 4th weekend of the month, FRVC staffs the San Gabriel Canyon Gateway, providing information to the public and selling Adventure Passes/America the Beautiful Passes. As families and individuals enter the San Gabriel Canyon, they stop at the Gateway to get the latest updates and ask questions. It is the perfect time to talk to visitors about Leave No Trace, where to fish, where to find water play, the best hikes in the area, etc. If you are interested in working with the public and have some time to volunteer, get in touch.
